Goodison Park boss Roberto Martinez and owner Bill Kenwright stood firm as the Blues weighed in with three bids for the England star prior to the campaign - the highest at £30million.

Stones even handed in a transfer request as the then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho made no attempt to conceal his admiration for the 21-year-old or hide his pursuit of him, but the more the Londoners pushed the more Everton dug in.

Their resolve to keep Stones when the transfer window next opens will, however, be seriously tested again with Chelsea and City desperate to sign him.

Stones, who joined Everton from Barnsley for £3m in 2013, is seen at Chelsea as a long-term successor to John Terry, who is sweating on his Stamford Bridge future.

The Chelsea skipper’s contract expires in June and he has yet to be offered a new deal.
