The Italian is on the verge of a loan switch from Liverpool after passing a medical with the Serie A outfit earlier today.

Milan confirmed a deal was close, throwing the striker a lifeline after a disastrous time at Anfield since arriving for £16m just a year ago.

And Balotelli knows just how important the opportunity is - revealing the club will always mean a lot to him.

"Did I think I would return to Milan? Yes, I always had Milan in my heart and I always had hope that I would return one day," he said.

I'm happy to have returned. I have little to say, just that I'm looking forward to train and prove my worth.

The deal is expected to see Balotelli return to Liverpool next summer, with the striker under contract until 2018.

Boss Brendan Rodgers remained tight-lipped on Balotelli departing but Anfield icon Jamie Carragher had his say on Monday Night Football, branding the signing a "mistake".

He said: "The quicker he is moved on (the better). They have Benteke and Sturridge coming back. I still can't believe that they signed him. He hasn't worked out and he has to move on.

"He is kidding some coaches if he gets a move to AC Milan."
